Where full automation is not economically feasible or humans are still a necessary part of the manufacturing process, there is an option where you get the best of both worlds. Collaborative robots were created to fill the void that industrial robots simply cannot fulfill - to be positioned in environments alongside human operators where a person's safety is not strictly determined by separation via guarding.
With the collaborative movement gaining momentum, the robotics division of ABB set forth to further push the envelop. They have achieved this with both their YuMi and soon-to-be-released One-Armed YuMi robots.
With a name based on the idea of "you" and "me", ABB's YuMi is the world's first truly collaborative dual-arm robot. Created to work in the same workspaces as humans, YuMi mimics a person's reach and ability to manipulate small workpieces with its dexterous grippers and accurate vision capabilities.

A follow-up product to the popular dual-arm YuMi, the single-arm variant offers all the same features in an even more compact form. The IRB 14050 can be used to feed parts to the IRB 14000 to increase flexibility or as an additional arm for more complex parts assembly.
